Akira Maeda is a retired Japanese professional wrestler and mixed martial artist. He was born on September 26, 1959 in Incheon, South Korea. Maeda was known for his time as one of the top stars in New Japan Pro Wrestling during the 1980s, where he was a member of the famous "UWF" faction.
Maeda was a skilled grappler and striker, known for his hard-hitting kicks and submission wrestling techniques. He was a pioneer in the sport of mixed martial arts, as he competed in the first ever shoot-style promotion, the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF). Maeda's matches in the UWF were known for their realistic and intense style, which would later influence the development of MMA.
